Dr. B. B. Gaitonde, who has been a true Visionary, Educationist, Philanthropist, and above all exemplary Human being, was born in Banda, a princely state of Sawantwadi. After completion of this primary education in Banda he did further schooling in Gokhale Education society’s D G T High school, Mumbai. He joined Wilson College in Mumbai to pursue his interest in science. He left school temporarily to join the struggle for freedom in 1942.
After having excelled in the inter science examination with distinction in science subjects, he joined the G S Medical College and K E M Hospital to complete his medical studies in1950. Thereafter he worked as a Resident and Registrar in clinical medicine at the K E M Hospital and completed his post graduation. Inspired by the Dean of the college he devoted himself to work related to research and teaching. He was awarded WHO fellowship for training in research methodology in London and was awarded a travelling fellowship to visit the best universities and research institutes in Europe.
On the basis of his work in the field of Medical Education and research in Bio-Medical Sciences, he was awarded the Rockfeller foundation (U.S.A.) fellowship to work in the US. Also he was awarded the fellowship of the association of common wealth universities to work as a visiting Professor at the University of New Castle upon the in U.K.
He is a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy award, the highest prestigious award in the field of Medicine in India. He was elected fellow of academy of Medical Sciences, India, Academy of Sciences, India and dean of faculty of medicine, university of Mumbai.
In 1972 he was invited to takeover as Director of Haffkine Institute, Mumbai a premiere institute in the world in the field of Bio-medical Research and production of vaccines. He was also advisor to world health organization (W.H.O) in South East Asia.
His research work covered areas such as tropical diseases, Traditional Medicine, Vaccines, Neuropharmacology and Clinical medicine with several research publications to his credit. He was a member of several research advisory committees with ICMR, CSIR and Govt. of India.
After his retirement he has returned to his Village. He devoted himself to promoting education and health in rural areas of Dist; Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Banda under whose management the college functions today was established under the able guidance of Dr B B Gaitonde, who has marshaled this institution with his immence experience in the field of education, medicine and administration. He was the founder President Trustee of Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Banda. He is currently a Trustee of Shikshan Prasarak Mandal and an Idol for everyone at the college.
